Item Number

It is a number to identify an item. It is given in several ways and it is commonly broken into smaller and is given a meaning to each. For example, the first two digits express the function, the next three digits express the type.

But too many rules given makes item numbers longer and numbering difficult. In today's computer age, the items are also controlled by computers and the item numbers are thought to be frequently entered into the system as a commonly-used key entry. Therefore it is better to keep the number as short as possible.
