Level by Level

It means "at each level" and the phrase of "level-by-level explosion" is often used. Common items are usually used for various types of products, and their levels used are different. Even if a certain item is used for various kinds of products or multi-levels structure and thus it appears several times in one explosion, however, in a series of MRP procedures such as calculating gross requirements, calculating net requirements, and lot sizing, only one procedure an item is performed. Therefore the explosion of requirements in MRP needs a level-by-level explosion. In the figure, for example, Item b is used at Level 1 and Level 2, and in the level-by-level explosion, the requirements planning is performed by summing the requirements of Item b explored at Level 1 and those of Item b explored at Level 2.
